Anthropic Launches The Anthropic Institute to Study the Societal Impact of Advanced AI
On March 11, 2026, AI company Anthropic announced the launch of the Anthropic Institute, a new research initiative focused on understanding the major societal challenges posed by increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems. The institute will publish insights from the company’s internal research to help policymakers, researchers, and the public prepare for the transition to a world with far more capable AI.
AI Progress Is Accelerating
According to Anthropic, the pace of AI development has accelerated significantly in recent years. The company notes that it took two years to release its first commercial model after its founding, but only three additional years to develop systems capable of identifying serious cybersecurity vulnerabilities, performing a wide range of professional tasks, and even contributing to the development of future AI technologies.
Anthropic believes the next two years could bring even more dramatic progress. The company argues that AI development is compounding over time, meaning each generation of improvements accelerates the next. As a result, extremely powerful AI - similar to the systems described by CEO Dario Amodei in his essay Machines of Loving Grace may arrive much sooner than many observers expect.
If that trajectory holds, societies may soon face major questions about how advanced AI will reshape jobs, economic systems, governance structures, and technological risks.
Researching AI’s Real-World Impact
The Anthropic Institute aims to study these challenges while the technology is still evolving. The institute will combine expertise from multiple disciplines, including machine learning, economics, and social sciences.
It brings together three existing research groups within Anthropic:
- Frontier Red Team, which stress-tests advanced AI models to understand the limits of their capabilities
- Societal Impacts, which examines how AI systems are used in the real world
- Economic Research, which studies the technology’s impact on employment and economic structures
The institute will also incubate new research teams focused on forecasting AI progress and studying how powerful AI systems could interact with legal systems and regulatory frameworks.
Leadership and Founding Researchers
The institute will be led by Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark, who will assume a new role as the company’s Head of Public Benefit.
Several prominent researchers are joining the initiative:
- Matt Botvinick, a Resident Fellow at Yale Law School and former Senior Director of Research at DeepMind, will lead research on AI and the rule of law.
- Anton Korinek, an economist from the University of Virginia, will focus on how transformative AI could reshape economic activity.
- Zoë Hitzig, who previously researched AI’s societal impact at OpenAI, will help connect economic research with model development and training.
Anthropic says the institute has a unique vantage point because it has access to insights that only developers of frontier AI systems possess. The organization plans to publish candid findings about the capabilities and risks of the technologies being developed.
Expansion of Public Policy Efforts
Alongside the launch of the institute, Anthropic also announced an expansion of its public policy operations.
The company is strengthening its policy team to help shape global AI governance discussions, focusing on areas such as model safety, transparency, infrastructure investment, export controls, and democratic leadership in AI.
The team will be led by Sarah Heck, who previously served as Head of Entrepreneurship at Stripe and worked on global entrepreneurship and public diplomacy policy at the White House National Security Council.
Anthropic also plans to open its first office in Washington, D.C., this spring as part of its growing global policy presence.
Preparing for the AI Transition
Anthropic says the goal of the Anthropic Institute is to help society better understand both the risks and opportunities associated with transformative AI.
As advanced AI systems begin to reshape science, economic development, and human decision-making, the company argues that transparent research and collaboration with governments, workers, and communities will be essential to managing the transition responsibly.
