Could This Be the Microsoft Version of OpenClaw? “Copilot Tasks” Launched
On February 26, 2026, Microsoft announced a new AI feature called Copilot Tasks. Unlike traditional chat-based AI, which mainly answers questions or generates text, this new functionality can automatically carry out tasks based on user instructions. The AI works in the background to handle tasks, reducing the amount of manual effort required by the user.
Examples of What It Can Do
Copilot Tasks supports a wide range of tasks for both daily life and work. Some examples include:
- Recurring Tasks
- Every evening, organize important emails and prepare draft replies. Unsubscribe automatically from unwanted promotional emails.
- Every Friday, check nearby rental listings and arrange property viewings.
- On Monday mornings, compile schedules for meetings and trips, and review how time is allocated and priorities are managed.
- Document and Material Creation
- Create a study plan based on a syllabus, including practice questions and dedicated focus time.
- Organize emails, attachments, and images, and generate polished presentation slides.
- Collect job listings and automatically tailor resumes and cover letters.
- Shopping and Service Arrangements
- Book a venue for a birthday party, send invitations, and manage RSVPs.
- Compare and book highly rated service providers.
- Monitor used car listings and schedule test drives.
- Life and Schedule Management
- Arrange rides to match flight schedules and adjust for delays.
- Monitor hotel rates and rebook when prices drop.
- Organize subscriptions and cancel those that are unused.
Usage and Safety
Users simply give instructions in natural language, and the AI plans and executes the tasks. Any critical actions, such as payments or sending messages, require user confirmation beforehand. Tasks can be one-time, recurring, or scheduled, and progress can be monitored at any time.
Current Status and Future Plans
Currently, Copilot Tasks is available as a research preview for a limited group of users. Microsoft plans to improve the feature based on participant feedback and gradually expand access. By automating routine tasks, the AI aims to reduce manual work and increase efficiency, making it a tool to watch for future adoption.
